Another strong race for Michael Leib

With the injuries of Gregory Aranda and Nicolas Aubin, American teenager Michael Leib was the single representative of team Rockstar Bud Racing Kawasaki in Latvia, home of the ninth round of the World Championship while Dylan Ferrandis was racing the opening round of the SX Tour in France.

Michael again faced a new challenge in Kegums, having never raced such a rugged track during his previous career, but he came through with flying colours after the inevitable initial difficulties coming to terms with the track. A mid-pack qualification gave him little chance of a good start and an early fall left him trailing the field, but, rejoining the race behind the leaders in a position where he was not inhibiting other points chasers, he quickly established a good rhythm with lap times comparable to the top ten. This put him in good stead for race two when he quickly advanced into the top ten, only losing a place to series leader Musquin in the closing stages of the race, to confirm his promise.

At the same time in France the SX Tour kicked off, and Dylan Ferrandis entered the opening round of the series in La Pampa. Fastest rider during the timed practice period, Dylan Ferrandis was racing his first ever Supercross on a 125 Kawasaki; runner up in the main event, he shows a strong potential and will be next week in Sweden for the next round of the 125 EMX series.

Michael Leib: “This track was a whole new experience for me. I never raced anything like it before and I struggled at first, but we got it figured out by race day. Unfortunately I got a poor start in the first race and then fell over, but my second start was better and I could battle for a top ten result. I just missed out on that when Musquin passed me in the last ten minutes; that was a little frustrating, but he is the champion and is on another level at the moment. But we’ll keep working hard and hopefully by the end of the season I will be where I want to be.”

Jacky Vimond: “We need to work hard on the start, as it for the moment his main problem. It cost him a lot of energy as he has always to push, for sure if he could start in the top ten things would be easier. In the first race he crashed and then had some troubles to re-start the bike; in the second one he recovered from eighteenth to eleventh, and battled with riders such as Simpson. He is improving every weekend, and for sure he will continue in this direction.”

Avec les blessures de Gregory Aranda et Nicolas Aubin, le jeune kid Américain Michael Leib était le seul représentant du team Rockstar Bud Racing Kawasaki en Lettonie, cadre du neuvième Grand Prix de la saison alors que Dylan Ferrandis participait à l'épreuve inaugurale du SX Tour 2010.

Une fois encore c’est un nouveau challenge qui attendait Michael, puisque ce dernier n’avait jamais roulé sur un tel circuit. Mélange de terre et de sable se creusant au fil des séances d’essai, ce circuit causa quelques soucis d’adaptation à Michael qui comme à son habitude ne baissa pas les bras. Qualifié en milieu de peloton avec la quinzième place en course qualificative, Michael manquera de réussite au premier départ et chutera avant même la fin du premier tour, perdant énormément de temps et d’énergie à redémarrer ; très attardé il reprendra néanmoins la course afin de mieux appréhender la piste, signant des chronos similaires à ceux réalisés dans le top dix. Ce fut un bon entrainement pour la seconde manche, ou il passera de la dix huitième à la onzième place ajoutant dix précieux points à son compteur.

Au même moment s’ouvrait en France le SX Tour, et Dylan Ferrandis était présent à La Pampa pour le coup d’envoi du championnat. Auteur du meilleur temps lors des essais chronométrés, Dylan disputait son premier Supercross en 125 et en prenant la seconde place de l’épreuve il confirme son potentiel dans cette discipline. Il sera le week-end prochain en Suède, pour y disputer la prochaine épreuve du championnat du Monde junior.

Michael Leib: « Cette piste fut une nouvelle expérience pour moi, jamais je n’avais roulé sur un tel circuit ! J’ai été un peu désorienté au départ, mais nous avons travaillé et progressé tout au long des séances. Malheureusement j’ai pris un mauvais départ en première manche et je suis tombé peu après ; en seconde manche je suis mieux parti et je me suis accroché au top dix, jusqu’à ce que Musquin ne me double en fin de course. C’est toujours un peu frustrant, mais il est champion du Monde et évolue encore à un autre niveau ; de notre côté nous continuons à travailler dur, et d’ici la fin de saison j’espère bien me situer là ou je le veux dans la hiérarchie. »

Jacky Vimond: « Nous allons devoir travailler dur sur les départs, car pour l’instant c’est un problème pour Michael. Ses départs moyens l’obligent à dépenser beaucoup d’énergie pour revenir, s’il partait dans le top dix les choses seraient plus simples. Il a rapidement perdu ses chances en chutant dès le début de la première manche, mais en seconde il a montré de belles choses en revenant de la dix huitième à la onzième place, se battant avec des pilotes comme Simpson. Il progresse chaque week-end, et cela va continuer j’en suis sûr. »
